Web Portfolio

As a former English major, I took the scenic route to get to my career in new media. I learned basic HTML in my American Studies Master’s Program at UVa and went from there, honing my skills at The Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. I am now proficient in HTML/XHTML, CSS, Flash, Photoshop/Fireworks, and working with CMS. I have made the move from web designer to design project manager (overseeing many web projects from conception to completion), to online marketing manager. I have experience with interactive marketing campaigns, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), link building campaigns, design & development with SEO in mind, managing Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaigns, email marketing campaigns, landing page design, and direct mail campaigns.  I am versed in Online Public Relations and I also hold a Google Adwords Professional certification.

My portfolio consists of projects that I have designed myself and others where I have managed and overseen the development from start to finish.

Design Projects

York Property Management Group

  • A website I created for York Property Management Group, a property management and real estate company based in York, PA. Site is created and maintained with Joomla! and Mosets Hot Property.

Patrone Events

  • An HTML/CSS website created for Patrone Events, a special events company in Philadelphia, PA.

Hoops.gmu.edu

  • The site that I created (with some help from fellow CHNMers) in a mad dash to record all the history-making events of the George Mason Patriots’ unexpected run to the Final Four in 2006. It’s a digital memory bank where people can send their stories and upload their pictures, videos, and songs to commemorate the event.

Recording the History of the Digital Present

  • A site that was created for a grad project, this is an online report of all the work that went into hoops.gmu.edu, the response to the project, and some of the highlights from “Hoops.”

Freak Show Design Project

  • A page I created as a graduate project at GMU, based on a fascination with 1920’s and 1930’s circus freaks.  The assignment was to choose a time period and design the color scheme, images, and typography accordingly.

The House That Tom Built

  • Another time-period design project page about Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson (where I also used to work as a tourguide).

That Marvelous Mark Twain – Photoshop Project

  • A Photoshop design project that required me to manually clean, hand color, crop, and resurrect damaged photos.

Black and White and Read All Over – Typography Project

  • The purpose of this project was to demonstrate awareness of word processing conventions, CSS, and ability to use type as both an element in information and aesthetic design. I chose a topic that I had researched in grad school–Diego Rivera’s Rockefeller Center mural.

Probate Inventories

  • A searchable database of probate inventories from Virginia and Maryland, 1740-1810. The site includes lesson plans, teaching strategies, and interviews with scholars.

USDiplomacy.org

  • A large project I created with the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training, this site offers the history of U.S. Diplomacy, as well as resources for foreign service officers.

History Here Grant Proposal Movie

  • A fun Flash movie that introduces you to the Virginia History Here Program, “Virginia’s Mobile Historical Information System.”

Loudoun County TAH Project

  • A Teaching American History project that gives Virginia educators a place to expand their content knowledge and skills, collaborate with other teachers, and develop new classroom resources.

Montgomery County TAH Project

  • A Teaching American History project that gives Maryland educators a place to expand their content knowledge and skills, collaborate with other teachers, and develop new classroom resources.

Mozilla Digital Memory Bank

  • A place to share your stories and experiences using Mozilla Firefox.  Served as lead designer on this project that we partnered with the Mozilla Foundation to create.

They Wore America on Their Sleeves: Fashion and “Americanness” in Interwar America

  • My M.A. Thesis from UVa. This site explores the relationship between clothes and the character of America in the 1920s and 1930s, showing how America’s ever-changing face was mirrored in the mirrors of its citizens. Check out the awesome interactive paper dolls in the “Fun With Fashion” section!

SLANG! in the 1930’s

  • A study of slang during the Great Depression, including a first-cited dictionary, and a look at New Deal, Soda Jerk, Hobo, Radio, Advertising, Youth, Jazz and Drug Slang. From AS@UVA. Such a cute site—check out all the dirty words and drug references!

Emmeline Grangerford’s Scrapbook

  • A look at the Victorian American way of death through the pages of Mark Twain’s character Emmeline Grangerford’s scrapbook. The site explores attitudes toward death, mourning, obituaries, postmortem photography (creepy), funerary practices, and epitaphs. My first real web project!

Mark Twain Sales Agent Spiel

  • I did the voice for one section Stephen Railton’s Mark Twain in His Times site. Listen to me try to sell you the latest book from Mark Twain.
